Meet the WarSting: the Sword That Can Detect Wi-Fi

We’ve all done it, I suppose – piggyback on someone’s unsecured Wi-Fi connection out of desperation. While this may not be such a problem these days – mobile Internet, hello – this Hobbit-related project is kind of cool.

Meet the WarSting.

For sure you are very familiar with Bilbo’s sword, Sting, which glows blue when orcs or goblins are in the vicinity. That’s rather handy, as you don’t want to get hacked into pieces and devoured by those stinking creatures.

In a more technological twist, the guys at Spark made some alterations to Sting so that it can be applied to today’s setting.

Using a toy Sting and a Spark Core, and following the instructions in the Spark blog, you can make the WarSting for yourself.

You’re going to have to do a bit of work to get the WarSting up and running, but I bet the fun of waving the sword around waiting for it to glow is well worth your while.
