Behold the World’s First Retractable Lightsaber

Behold the World’s First Retractable Lightsaber

Canada has brought us a lot of things, some we may have taken for granted. While we’re pretty sure it’s hard to beat Chris Hadfield, this guy certainly deserves some sort of medal for bringing us what we’ve all dreamt of having for ourselves – an honest-to-goodness for real retractable lightsaber.

Canadian engineer James Hobson is set to be a hero in all Star Wars fans eyes with his latest creation, shared on YouTube channel the Hacksmith (10.3 million subscribers, hey-o!).

In the 18 minutes or so video, Hobson takes you through several chapters…from a teaser (in true franchise style) to the team’s work creating the retractable lightsaber to testing, at which point you’ll probably be all worked up.

The retractable lightsaber has been made to closely resemble something that would be right at home in the Star Wars universe – right down to the hilt. The power, though, is a portable backpack. Oh, the limits of our time!

Still, the creativity and ingenuity that went into this beast is amazing.

We’re not going to get into the details of how it works – better if you see that from the video, but think propane gas and oxygen = plasma beam. Then, a variety of salts to play around with colors. You know, because sometimes we want to be on the dark side.

Watch and eat your heart out. Our hearts are all eaten out, and we’re feeling greener than the Hulk could ever be.
