Neighborhood TARDIS Library Built by a Detroit Local Is a Thing of Wonder
Having your own TARDIS is every Doctor Who fan’s dream. We settle for replicas, little figures – even life-size “almost real” police boxes. Then there are wallets, bags, phone cases – yes, I’ve got my own stash.
But you’ll probably find it difficult to identify something that can beat this neighborhood TARDIS library built by a Detroit local. Or rather, hero.
That statement is enough to make anyone want to give the guy a medal for his work.
Reading is perhaps the most important skill children should acquire – and I know that you are nodding your head right now.
So, why don’t we all give Dan Zemke a round of applause for his creating something real and useful by putting together his love of reading and Doctor Who?
In an interview with The Verge, Zemke shares that the idea came to him because of a program at work called “Reach-Out-and-Read”. And, with the help of his dad and the Tardis Builders, Zemke is providing his neighborhood a practical and awesome TARDIS library.
Guess what? Like the Doctor’s box, this TARDIS library is also bigger on the inside (-ish):
Part of that design is practical: given the size of the box, he didn’t want it to be misused, so he “came up with the idea for this false wall at the front to stop people from living in [it]. We also put more shelving in the back to hold more reserve books and to limit space.”
If you ever find yourself in Detroit, go to corner Vermont Street and Warren West Avenue and feel free to leave and/or take books with you.
