Open Bicycle: The First DIY 3D-printed Bike
Bikers, DIY-ers, and 3D printing enthusiasts, listen up. This revolutionary product just might be what you have been waiting for.
More than being another proof that 3D printing is taking over the world, here is a prime example of ingenuity of young minds.
A couple of Dutch students are working on an open source project which features a 3D-printed bicycle which they call the Open Bicycle.
Stef de Groot and Paul De Medeiros say that their goal is to provide people to create a bicycle on their own – from customization to manufacturing. The parts will be 3D-printed, making the bike even more unique as it’s the first fully modular ride out there.
The creators explain the idea underlying their project:
We wanted to design a 3D printed bicycle because we felt that the options for consumer 3D printing are still very limited. We noticed that consumers, after having access to 3D printers for a couple of weeks and printing their fill of bottle openers and action figures, become disillusioned with 3D printing. They often lose their enthusiasm because they see no real value of 3D printing for their everyday lives. With The Bike Project, we wanted to make a major push towards a future we believe in; where anyone with access to a 3D printer and internet, will be able to manufacture tools/products that they will use in their everyday lives, and that those around them can use in their everyday lives.
Indeed, this project not only is innovative technically but will also encourage the use of bikes more instead of cars.
