How Do You Feel About Uhura, Kirk, and Spock Barbie Dolls?
So Mattel is going to celebrate Star Trek’s 50th anniversary by releasing Star Trek Barbie dolls. I don’t know what to think of that.
On the one hand, it could be a good way to start kids young on Star Trek. Then again, why not just get them action figures and quiet books? Or go the old school way and tell bedtime stories?
But if you think about it, it’s not really surprising that Mattel is joining the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the best sci-fi franchise ever. (Biased much?)
The dolls are based on the likeness of the original TOS actors, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols. Not that I have anything against the reboot cast, but this choice is one can take comfort in.

However, I am still not convinced about Barbie dolls and Star Trek. It just seems wrong for some reason. I don’t have Vulcan logic, I have to admit, but my intuition can be magic at times. Still, I do wonder what Mr. Spock would have said about this.
Just look at Kirk! Hello, Mr. Shatner. What say you?
In any case, the dolls (I can’t say action figures just yet) are fully articulated and have some of the traits/accessories we associate with them.
Kirk has a communicator and a phaser. Uhura has a communicator and a tricorder. Spock’s hand in raised in the Vulcan salute, of course, and he also has a communicator.
Each doll costs $34.95.
If you’re in, you can get them from the Mattel website. If you do get them, let us know how it goes when you show them off to your Trekkie circle.
