500 Years Later: An Oral History of Final Fantasy VII
The Final Fantasy franchise is no doubt one of the most epic video game series in history. And when it comes to the franchise, Final Fantasy VII is probably the most loved of all.
Released in the 90s (haven’t we said repeatedly that that decade rules?!), Final Fantasy VII was a breakthrough in the genre. The budget (over $40 million) and story were considered huge, and the industry has changed drastically, Final Fantasy VII still sits high among the ranks of the most highly regarded video games.
It’s no wonder, then, that we are seeing the likes of this book on Kickstarter – 500 Years Later: An Oral History of Final Fantasy VII.
This Final Fantasy VII book is based on Matt Leone’s celebrated 27,000 word history, published online by Polygon in January this year. Using the digital material as a springboard, 500 Years Later: An Oral History of Final Fantasy VII, gives us the pleasure of holding some tangible. More so, material has been added, including specially commissioned illustrations and new standalone interviews.
Series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has also given his stamp of approval by writing the foreword.
500 Years Later: An Oral History of Final Fantasy VII is a collaboration between Read-Only Memory and Polygon, with bonuses like three bookmarks which you might not want to use simply because you don’t want wear and tear. From the project page:
Designed by Rachel Dalton, each copy of the book comes bundled with a trio of stunning heavyweight bookmarks to aid and enhance the reading experience:
- Die cut codebreaker bookmark, used to decipher a secret ‘Easter Egg’ code found throughout the book
- Contents bookmark, providing an at-a-glance overview of the book’s structure
- Tokyo street map bookmark, rendered in white ink and with the location of Square’s Arco Tower HQ stamped with holofoil
There’s more – a whole lot more – to the project, and there are still 26 days left for you to fund it. I suggest you do it now if you want a piece of the action, though, as it has already exceeded the initial goal!
We don’t have a Final Fantasy clock, but we do have a Space Invaders one you might like.
