Celebrate Geek Pride Day Tomorrow, May 25, 2016
Tomorrow is the day we can all wear our geek, loud and proud.
No, that’s not right. I stand corrected.
Every single day, we can do that; but, tomorrow is something special. That day we all celebrate our pride in being geek – officially.
Yup. It’s as official as it can be, what with Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope being released on May 25, 1977 (I am not 100% comfy about this because, you know, Star Trek?). Add to that Towel Day, which we also celebrate on the same day, in honor of Douglas Adams (where’s your towel?).
That being said, no one can dispute the fact that tomorrow is a very special day for geeks the world over, for it is Geek Pride Day. Now, if only our bosses could understand and give us the day off!
If you haven’t got a Geek Pride Day event happening near you, here are some ideas for some DIY celebrating.
1. Shop!
We all love our toys, so let your hair down and loosen your grip on that wallet. Visit our own store for some of the geekiest items in town – from clocks to lamps to bags. Get new towels to salute Douglas Adams. Buy books, special edition Blu-rays. Buy whatever your geek heart wants.
2. Throw an impromptu party.
Send a message blast to the crew and prepare for a night of pizza, gaming, or a movie (hint: Star Wars? Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?). Don’t forget the drinks. Don’t settle for soda or beer. Instead, make geeky drinks like these Harry Shotters.
3. Watch Ghostbusters and live tweet it.
Because Ghostbusters. But seriously, your favorite movie will do. Live tweeting it with the hashtag #GeekPrideDay is just a bonus. Also, create a unique hashtag to make it your own. If people unfollow you, who cares? You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.
4. Go get that tattoo.
Have you been sitting on that tattoo design for years? Maybe it’s time you went ahead and did it. Don’t be like Wolowitz.
5. Enroll in an online course and learn something new.
Isn’t this what we geeks do?
- Learn Klingon at Duolingo. Note: This doesn’t start till August, but add it to iCal.
- Study Game Theory courtesy of The University of Tokyo.
- Look for other courses that interest you at MOOC LIST.
