LEGO Going Environment-Friendly, In Search of Alternative to Oil-based Plastics

Nothing hurts like stepping on a LEGO brick, but nothing’s more satisfying that marvelling at your own creations. Whether or not other people get what you’ve built – especially if you’re a kid – putting those bricks together is one heck of an experience. And you don’t forget that, even as an adult.

What you may not know is that LEGO bricks are made from oil-based plastics, which we’re all supposed to know is bad for the environment. Not only that, oil is bound to run out at some point, and well, we can’t have a world without LEGO, can we?

That’s why LEGO going environment-friendly is good news on different levels.

The company has just published a press release announcing its plans to invest in finding alternatives to the current plastics. In the press release, LEGO announced that it is investing 1 billion DKK (Danish Krone) to research, develop, and implement sustainable raw materials for the bricks, as well as packaging. That’s a gazillion dollars! And the minifigs are happy about it. 😉

Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, CEO and President of the LEGO Group, says:
“This is a major step for the LEGO Group on our way towards achieving our 2030 ambition on sustainable materials. We have already taken important steps to reduce our carbon footprint and leave a positive impact on the planet by reducing the packaging size, by introducing FSC certified packaging and through our investment in an offshore wind farm. Now we are accelerating our focus on materials.”

I never even knew they were using wind power!

This is one for the books, folks. More LEGO, please!
