New LEGO Minifigs Pay Tribute to the Women of NASA
LEGO Ideas never fail to impress, and this one by Maia Weinstock certainly makes our AFOL hearts beat faster. While her credentials alone will get your attention (@MIT News deputy editor and @MITWGS lecturer among other things), the fact that she is the creator of the LEGO NASA Women set, makes her even more awesome.
As Weinstock says in her LEGO Ideas page, “Ladies rock outer space!”.
Buzz Aldrin may be the first thing that comes to mind when it’s space talk time (though right now, it’s all Star Trek: Discovery under our roof, fiction it may be), but there are women who have just as important roles and contributions to NASA and our explorations of space in general.
Unsurprisingly, the LEGO NASA Women set got the votes it needed and was approved. As early as this year, LEGO already announced that the set was going to be released, and if you’ve been awaiting specific release details, then you’re in for a treat.
The LEGO NASA Women set will be released on November 1 and will cost $24.99.
The Verge reports that the set has 231 pieces and that it will feature four prominent women astronauts in three dioramas.
The astronauts are:
- Nancy Grace Roman – known for her part in the planning and development of programs such as including the Cosmic Background Explorer and the Hubble Space Telescope
- Margaret Hamilton – leader of the team that developed the flight software for the agency’s Apollo missions
- Sally Ride – America’s first woman in space (aboard the Challenger)
- Mae Jemison – the first African-American woman in space
