Star Wars Versus Star Trek: A Popularity Contest
The “war” between Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans has been going on since time immemorial, with each camp being just as passionate to defend their franchise. Disclosure: I have always been a Star Trek fan, and I have only seen Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. (I can see the bashing coming now…)
To be fair, I know that each franchise has its own merits and failings, so I won’t go into my own opinions here (not that I’ve seen enough of Star Wars to have a say, really). But how can you beat these Captain Picard Facepalm Cookies? Seriously. Tell me.
Anyhow, the guys at real estate site Movoto have come up with maps that compare the density of Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans across the United States. It may not be the end all be all of the debate about which is the better franchise, but the maps do show the results of a “popularity contest”: Star Wars versus Star Trek.
Which one do you think is more popular? Here, take a look.

If you look closely at the maps and do your own analysis, the inevitable conclusion is this (sorry Trekkies): Star Wars reigns supreme.
How did the Movoto guys determine this?
They scoured the most popular social media site – Facebook – and took a look at the percent of a state’s population that “Liked” either Star Wars or Star Trek.
Their finding: “Unfortunately for Trekkies, it became pretty obvious pretty fast that “Star Wars” reigned supreme, winning out in every single state, most of the time by a ratio of 3 to 1.”
