You Need CLAPTRAP If You Love MAD Magazine
Many of us grew up reading comic books and all the love for them has only grown as we got older. Aside from the usual superhero comics, for people of my generation, an abiding love for the iconic MAD Magazine is not uncommon. Indeed, since it was founded in 1952 by editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines, the comic book-turned-magazine has a special place in many a person’s life.
Unfortunately, the company decided to publish its final original issue in April 2018. That means there are still tons of TV shows and movies that we won’t get to see in the distinct style of MAD Magazine.
Fortunately, MAD Magazine creators Desmond Devlin and Tom Richmond want to keep the legacy alive. And they’re doing so with CLAPTRAP: Movie spoofs in a classic humorous vein!
In case you need their credentials…
Artist Tom Richmond debuted in MAD in 2000, becoming its signature caricaturist in the years that followed, and is the winner of the prestigious 2011 Reuben Award for the year’s outstanding cartoonist.
Writer Desmond Devlin wrote his first MAD article in 1984 when he was a teenager, became its most prolific writer during his 36-year tenure, and knows the winner of the prestigious 2011 Reuben Award.
And, guess what the first movie they’re featuring is?
Star Wars fans, head up – “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
Of course, we get a sneak peek…
One that has surely already gotten you hooked.
The creators are planning on completing several volumes, the first of which will have at least 10 original movie parodies plus extra comedic material. Hardcover and about 88-96 color pages of movie parodies you’ve never seen before.
